What We Do

We are local community members helping young people determine their future through the power of voting. We were inspired by high school registration drives throughout California and modeled Vote Humboldt after those campaigns. Although from different backgrounds, we share a love of where we live, a passion for independent media, and a belief that our democracy will only thrive with an informed, engaged citizenry.

We began working with Humboldt high schools in 2019 but had to curtail our efforts in early 2020 due to the pandemic, and are resuming our work in the fall of 2021. This year, we are partnering with The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County on this project; their research has shown classroom visits to be the most efficient and effective method for high school voter registration. Acting at the invitation of school leadership, we provide classroom-based training for students in the school’s leadership, government, or other relevant classes. We engage students in a discussion about the importance of voting and, ideally, register or preregister them to vote during these sessions.

Our volunteers provide a three-step process:

If you are interested in supporting or volunteering with our project, or would like to invite us to your campus, call or email us (see the contact information below).

AB 963

Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act

The California Students Vote Project (SVP) is a first of its kind partnership in the nation where all major institutions of higher education in California have solidified commitments to partner with the California Secretary of State to encourage student civic engagement efforts.

In 2019, AB 963 codified the SVP into state law, allowing the Secretary of State’s Office to continue the mission of engaging California students in the democratic process.
